Many times I am asked “What is the difference between page breaks and next page section break?”
The simple answer is that the first one is merely a page break and the second allows for more complex formatting. Keep reading and this should become clearer when you begin working with numbering sections and pages.
I have a table of contents. I have the formatting marks show so that you can see where all breaks and paragraph marks appear.
As you can see on the right side of the TOC, the page numbers for the preface and the appendix are styled the same as the rest of the chapters. But suppose you want them to appear differently. As an example, maybe you might like to have Roman numerals.
For this to work, you would first need to section off or put my document in chunks, so Word would know how I want to organize it by sections – by creating next page section breaks instead of regular page breaks to break up the chapters.
Once I have swapped out all the page breaks and placed in next page section breaks, I am ready to customize my page numbers!
That will be covered in my next post! Be on the lookout!
