Carol’s Humble Ramblings…

Spring is here although it definitely does not feel like it at the moment.  It is chilly, rainy, windy, and gloomy.  But still Spring persists as do we all.

The tulips bloomed as did the Hyacinths, daffodils, etc. and all the trees are lush with new leaves. So I know the sun will come out again in short order.

Things are slowly returning to a new “normal” in my world and I an getting on with things.  Busy is always good!

I hope you learn something new in this month’s posts and that you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoyed creating them.

How To Suppress Notifications in Windows 10

Notifications is one of the highly touted features in Windows 10 and it definitely can be a plus. It handles system-wide notifications, allowing any application, including programs like Outlook 2016 and Adobe’s Creative Cloud, to display messages. Alternatively, it can also be extremely distracting and at times has the potential to be very embarrassing. The more applications you use, the more  distracting those notifications can get.

Picture yourself in front of a large audience with a PowerPoint presentation. You are presenting a slide and a very personal notification pops up for everyone to see.  How embarrassing right?  So yes, at times this “feature” can also prove to be the bane of your existence. The good news is that you can take control of the situation and do things your way.

Follow the steps below to learn how to disable this feature:

  1. Open the Settings’ application and go to the Notifications & Actions section.
  2. To turn off all notifications from applications, move the Get notifications from apps and other senders slider to the Off position.
  3. To choose which applications are allowed to interrupt you, scroll down to the section headed Get notifications from these senders. Move the slider for an individual app to the Off position to silence all notifications from that application or feature.

For more fine-tuned control over how an individual application can display notifications, click the application’s entry in the Notifications list, which will give you five options.

  1. The top entry on the list, Notifications, lets you disable all notifications, graying out all the other options.
  2. For control over pop-up messages and sounds, use the Show notification banners and Play a sound when a notification arrives options.
  3. If you do not want the notification panel (formerly Action Center) to be cluttered with old notifications from an application, move the slide Show notifications in action center to the Off position.
  4. Finally, use the Keep notifications private on the lock screen to prevent calendar entries and alarms from displaying when you are not at your desk and have locked the screen.

 

 

How To Clear The Contents Of A Table

Word comes with a table editor that you can use to create simple or complex tables. If you find yourself spending a lot of time working on a table to have it fit your specific needs and formatted exactly the way you like, you may want to copy the table to a new location so you can use the same layout more than once. Why waste time reinventing the wheel right?  After you copy your table, you will t want to erase the contents of the table so that you can key in your new text.

My quick and easy  way to erase the data in my table, is to select the entire table and then hit the Delete key. Your information in the table is cleared, but the structure of your table remains.

Please note though, that you must press the Delete key. If, instead, you press Backspace while the whole table is selected, Word will delete your entire table, not just the content.

Easy peasy!

How To Find/Install Add-Ins For Office365

It is very simple to find and install Office 365 Add-Ins!

Simply open one of your Office 365 applications like Word.

Next, click Insert and select Get Add-ins.

A box will appear giving you a number of options. You can then scroll through the complete list of and browse by category or use keywords to search for a particular add-in

You can click on any of the Add-ins to read more about it, including any reviews that may have been posted.

Many of these add-ins are free, but there are an equal number that are related to paid applications that you may or may not already be using.  In that instance, the add-in description will advise you that its use may require additional purchase.

Once you are ready to to try out an add-in, simply click the Add button and it will be installed on your computer. Please note though, that if you work in an office where Office 365 is centrally managed by your IT department, you may need t6o ask them to install the add-in for you.
