The holidays are over and we have been experiencing some of the coldest weather on record for our region! Thankfully, we are now back to somewhat more seasonable temperatures.

As far as I am concerned, we are now on a march toward Springtime!  I was so grateful to get out of the single digits so I could get back outside again!

I think I have put together some really good articles for you this month and I hope you agree.

Default Setting 2 That you Can Change to Make Word 2016 to Your Liking

Again, I am here to show you a default setting that you can change in Word 2016 so that it behaves the way YOU want it behave, instead of how its default setting does.

Line Spacing

The latest iteration of Word Is geared more toward folks using the Web. The default line spacing has been changed to 1.15 – a more casual look that works well if you are creating content for the Web. If you are not, however, and most of are not, you can change this setting.

Most companies and their employees are going for the older more formal look and this can still be achieved.

Follow the steps below to learn how:

  1. In your Styles Quick Gallery, right click on Normal.
  2. Select Modify.
  3. From the Format list, select Paragraph.
  4. You can also right-click the background in your document or inside a paragraph, to select Paragraph.

  1. In the Spacing area, change the At setting from 1.15 to 1, or change Multiple to Single.
  2. If it has been enabled, click Set As Default.
  3. Click OK.
  4. If Set As Default is not enabled, click OK and New Documents Based on this Document option at the bottom.

If you are wondering about the Multiple setting, a Multiple setting of 1 is similar to Single but not the same. The Line Spacing setting determines how Word will handle spacing when a line has more than one font size. This distinction will not matter to many of us. Also, line spacing is  not always the same size as your font. Many fonts use a smaller measurement for line spacing.

Never Use Multiple Tabs Or Spaces to Align Data in your Word Documents

Yes, I know a gazillion people who think it is just easier to keep hitting that Tab key all the way across their document so that blocks of texts will line up for them. That’s all well and good if they like wasting time and keystrokes, but what about if this is a document that other colleagues have to work on?

Hello!  Welcome to the new age where we try to do things as quickly and efficiently as possible!

I cannot tell you how irritating it is to have a document submitted to me so that I can fix it and I find all these tabs across a page.  Yes, I know it works for you and you like to take the longest path to a solution, but please, I’m begging you – please do not continue to do this!

There is always one person in a law firm who does this to line up a signature block.  Just click on your Ruler to place a tab where you want to start your signature block or any other text you would like aligned. That is is!  That’s all you have to do!

Now, when you click your Tab key, it will move immediately to where you want it. One click!

See how easy this is? I hope you always remember this and stop using all those tabs in the future!

Default 1 You Can Change in Word 2016 to Make it More to Your Liking

Sure Office 2016 has been around for a bit now, but trust me, there are still lots and lots of users who are still slogging through the settings that just are not to their liking. Those users will never be comfortable with the applications the way they are straight out of the box.  The good news is you can configure it to suit your liking.

Below is but one setting that you can reconfigure:

The Start Screen

When you launch Word, it will display a list of templates and recent files called to the Start screen. If you prefer to start with a blank document, as I do, you can make that happen again!

Follow the steps below to learn how:

  1. Click File | Options.
  2. In the left-hand pane, select General.
  3. In the Start Up Option section, deselect the Show The Start Screen When this Application Starts option.

  1. Click OK.

You can do this not only in Word, but in all the Office applications that you use!

Subscribers: Why Won’t My Fields Calculate in a Locked Form Document?

Recently a subscriber contacted me because she had a locked form in which she had fields that would not calculate. That is to say that her form had Field 1, Field 2 and Field 3. These fields were to be calculated with a total appearing in Field 4 and it simply wasn't working for her.
