Carol’s Random Ramblings…

Spring has sprung and there are beautiful plants blooming and trees flowering.  We just celebrated Easter and it was so good to see my whole family again.  We are not all fully vaccinated yet, but it was a lovely day and we stayed outside and wore masks except when we were eating and we practiced social distancing then.  It was great to see the boys playing Lacrosse and the girls and boys playing down by the stream again.  It was so NORMAL, something I have been craving for over a year now as I am sure a lot of you have as well. But we are rounding the corner now. I have plans to meet friends for lunch and I am so excited for that!  I hope you are all getting vaccinated and will be able to once again have some normalcy in your lives.

I guess it is true, we can get through anything.  We just have to be strong and stay the course.  In the meantime though, please take the time to help those who cannot get out and please, please, please be kind to everyone you encounter.  There seems to be so much hatred in the world of late.  I am trying to be the change I want to see and I hope you will join me in that regard.

How To Use Smart Lookup in Word 365

There are so many great features in Office 365 so I have selected just one to tell you about that will save you oodles of time and keystrokes.

It can be a real pain having to keep opening windows and tabbing between screens right? The good news is you no longer have to do that.  And it’s easy!

Follow the steps below to learn how:

  1. Make sure you are logged into your cloud account.
  2. When editing or creating a new document, simply highlight a word or phrase and select Smart Lookup.
  3. This will allow you to retrieve top search results and you never have to leave your document.

How To Import Word Documents to PowerPoint

Did you know that you can embed Word content into your PowerPoint presentation? Well I am here to tell you that you absolutely can and it is not all that terribly difficult to do! You can embed your Word document as an object, which will insert a snapshot of your document. You can also use a Word outline as the foundation of your presentation. Be aware that this feature is only available for Word on the Web!

Follow the steps below to learn how:

  1. Open the document that you would like to import into your PowerPoint presentation on the Web.
  2. Make sure it contains text only as your document headings will become the slide headings in your presentation.
  3. Click on File | Export | Export to PowerPoint presentation.
  4. In Export Presentation, select a design theme for your presentation.
  5. Select Export.
  6. Word will now export and transform your document, applying the theme you chose above.
  7. Once the transformation is finished, click Open presentation to view the results in PowerPoint for the Web and Word for the web will save the transformed presentation to the root folder of your OneDrive.

How To Use Formulas in Excel

Formulas are those wonderful features in Excel that do all the work for folks like me who are not all that adept dealing with numbers. Am I ok letting the program do that work for me?  Heck yeah!

Follow the steps below to allow Excel to save you lots and lots of time and frustration:

=NOW – Shows the date and time

=TODAY0 – Shows the current date without the time

=MONTH(TODAY0 – Shows current month in a cell

=TODAY0+10 – Adds 10 days to current date

=SUM – Calculates the sum of a group of values

=AVERAGE – calculates the mean of a group of values

=COUNT – Counts the number of cells in a range that contain numbers

=INT – Removes the decimal portion of a number

=ROUND – Rounds a number to a specified number of decimal places

=IF – Tests for a true or false condition

Caveat: Where it looks like a lower case O at the end of a formula here it is actually a zero.
