How To Suppress Notifications in Windows 10

Notifications is one of the highly touted features in Windows 10 and it definitely can be a plus. It handles system-wide notifications, allowing any application, including programs like Outlook 2016 and Adobe’s Creative Cloud, to display messages. Alternatively, it can also be extremely distracting and at times has the potential to be very embarrassing. The more applications you use, the more  distracting those notifications can get.

Picture yourself in front of a large audience with a PowerPoint presentation. You are presenting a slide and a very personal notification pops up for everyone to see.  How embarrassing right?  So yes, at times this “feature” can also prove to be the bane of your existence. The good news is that you can take control of the situation and do things your way.

Follow the steps below to learn how to disable this feature:

  1. Open the Settings’ application and go to the Notifications & Actions section.
  2. To turn off all notifications from applications, move the Get notifications from apps and other senders slider to the Off position.
  3. To choose which applications are allowed to interrupt you, scroll down to the section headed Get notifications from these senders. Move the slider for an individual app to the Off position to silence all notifications from that application or feature.

For more fine-tuned control over how an individual application can display notifications, click the application’s entry in the Notifications list, which will give you five options.

  1. The top entry on the list, Notifications, lets you disable all notifications, graying out all the other options.
  2. For control over pop-up messages and sounds, use the Show notification banners and Play a sound when a notification arrives options.
  3. If you do not want the notification panel (formerly Action Center) to be cluttered with old notifications from an application, move the slide Show notifications in action center to the Off position.
  4. Finally, use the Keep notifications private on the lock screen to prevent calendar entries and alarms from displaying when you are not at your desk and have locked the screen.
