Most folks have not heard of the Advanced field in Word. As a matter of fact, I just learned about it myself recently and so of course, I had to share it with you!
You can use the Advance field to determine where text is positioned in your Word document and there are several options available to you. A lot of folks are frightened of fields and find it very intimidating to use them. Once you take the first step you will find that not only are fields not intimidating, they are downright helpful and can save you lots of time and keystrokes as well.
Fields allow you to control different features in MS Word to to insert special information in your documents. The Advance field is very useful in positioning the text that follows the field, to the end of the paragraph. Sure, you can use superscript and subscript to position text but this is a bit different and it gives you more options.
You could, for instance, decide to have all text following the field moved up by twelve points. To accomplish this, you would use the following field: { ADVANCE \u 12 }.
But why limit yourself? There are several switches that you can use with the advance field for different effects:
SWITCH | MEANING |
---|---|
\d | Moves text down a specified number of points |
\l | Moves text left a specified number of points. (Text to the left is overwritten) |
\r | Moves text right a specified number of points. |
\u | Moves text up a specified number of points. |
\x | Moves text a specified distance from the left margin of the column or frame. |
\y | Moves text to the specified vertical position relative to the current line position. The entire line of text that contains the field is moved. |
