Word keeps a variety of information regarding your document. Most of it can be seen by clicking on File | Property.
Word also has many different fields that will allow you to insert this information in your document. You can, for instance, use the FILESIZE field to insert the size of your file in your document, in bytes.
In addition to individual fields to insert document information, Word also provides you with INFO field that can insert much of the same information.
Follow the steps below to learn how:
- Place your cursor where you would like your field placed.
- Be certain the Insert tab of the Ribbon is displayed.
- In the Text group, click the Quick Parts tool to display f choices from which you should select Field. The Field dialog box will appear.
- Using the Categories drop-down list, select Document Information.
- In the Field Names list, choose Info.
- Notice there is a a lot of information you can insert using the INFO field, though I don’t know why you would use the INFO field instead of a different field that could do the same thing. In most cases you would not. The INFO field is just an alternate method of accomplishing the same thing. There is one instance where you would find the INFO field indispensable, however. This field will allow you to update the contents of some of your document properties, right in your field. If you use the INFO field with certain info types, you can add another argument to your field and Word will update the property. Below is an example.
{ INFO Comments "This is Carol's" }
This field will result in the Comments document property being updated to “This is Carol’s.”
You can use the INFO field to update any of the below document properties (info types):
- Author
- Comments
- Keywords
- Subject
- Title.
