Drawing objects can really spiff up an otherwise dull and drab worksheet in Excel. Text boxes, arrows, asterisks, or any of the many drawing objects that ship with Excel can certainly go the distance in helping you to artfully illustrate your data.
In Excel 2007, you fill find most of the drawing objects on the Insert menu. What most folks tend to use are Picture, Clip Art, Shapes, SmartArt, Text boxes and WordArt. Simply select the object you would like to use, click it, and drag it into your worksheet to draw.
Creating the correct sizing and placement of those objects in your worksheet can be tricky at times. But, there is a fairly obscure and overlooked trick you can use when working with drawing objects that can make your task much easier.
Follow the steps below to learn how:
- Holding down the ALT key while dragging the object’s border or sizing handle can easily resize your objects and/or align them with your cell borders. As you drag, the edge of the object will "snap" to the cell border.
Go ahead and try it. You will very quickly see how much easier your task has become by simply using the ALT key!
