[July 15, 2010]

It has been very dry in our neck of the woods and we finally got a soft steady rainfall that lasted most of the day. I hate to see my flowers wilting even though I water them thoroughly.

Summer is in full swing and we attended a lovely cookout last weekend. It was very enjoyable until a gnat decided to fly into my eye and then die. I had a devil of a time getting the little bugger out of there but I finally managed to do so and only had a bit of irritation in my eye from my efforts. It could only happen to me! I'm just grateful it all worked out.

We ended up having a fairly quiet July 4th and spent it around home. I lit the citonella candles and sat outside thinking I would see some pretty fireworks but all I heard was some loud booms. It was still enjoyable to sit there and watch the fireflies flitting to and fro through the trees and sniffing the air perfumed with honeysuckle. It doesn't take much to make me happy!

The quote for the day is:

Education is an ornament in prosperity and a refuge in adversity. - - Aristotle

Slide Numbers in MS PowerPoint

A reader recently wrote to me inquiring how to have her MS PowerPoint slides show the slide numbers in an x of y format

Of course, this is absolutely doable and without a lot of fuss and muss either.

For those of you who do not already know how to insert slide numbers, follow the steps below:

  1. In version 2003, click on View | Header and Footer.
  2. Select the box that that says Slide Number above the one that says Footer.
  3. If you do not want a slide number on your title slide, select the box that says Don't show on title slide.
  4. Click Apply to All.
  5. In versions 2007 and 2010, click on the first slide in your presentation and on the Insert tab, click Slide Number to open the Header and Footer dialog box on the Slide tab.
  6. Select the slide number and click Apply to All.

The steps above will insert a basic slide number at the bottom of each of your slides. Should you want to have your slide numbers display as x of y, as the person who inquired, you will need to do it a little differently.

Follow the steps below to learn how:

  1. In version 2003, after you have inserted your slide numbers, click on View | Master | Slide Master.
  2. In version 2007 or 2010, on the View tab, select Slide Master.
  3. In the lower right-hand corner you will see a placeholder with <#> in it. following that, key in of x with the x being the total number of slides in your presentation. If your presentation had 15 slides, it would look like this: <#> of 15.

Now, in Normal view, you will see the slide number and the total number of slides in your footer.

Be aware that should you add or delete slides in your presentation, you will have to change the number of pages in the Slide Master so that they view correctly.

Page Numbers in Text in MS Word

Most folks know that it is very easy to add numbers to a page in your MS Word document. But suppose you want those page numbers to display using words rather than numbers? It's not as diffcult as you might think.

Follow the steps below to learn how:

Version 2003

  1. Insert your page numbers as you normally would.
  2. Select the field that makes up the page number.
  3. Click Shift + F9 to display the field code instead of the field results.
  4. After the field code (which in most cases is the PAGE code) enter the following switch: \*CardText.
  5. If you want the spelled-out word to start with a capital letter, then add the following to the field code: \*Caps.
  6. Click F9 to update the field code and display its results.

Pretty easy wouldn't you say?

Follow the steps below to learn how:

  2. Navigate to the graphic file you would like to use as your background.
  3. Click the Insert button to apply the background.
  4. MS Excel will display the image in a tiled format.
  5. Note that the background is only visible onscreen; it will not appear when you print your worksheet.
  6. To remove the background graphic:
  7. Click on Format | Sheet | Delete Background from the menu bar.
