[August 15, 2009]

Summer is on the wane. I can hear the crickets chirping in the evenings now and that is a sure sign that summer will not be here for much longer. It makes me sad to see the end of summer. Even though we have the same amount of chores and we still have a job to go to, the pace of life just seems slower to me somehow. We have a lot more light at the end of the day and I can linger on the porch and watch the sun set. It's just a bit more relaxing and I can sit there and clear my mind and settle down after all the hubub of the day.

But we have September around the corner and that is always fun as well - kids going back to school, pumpkins and as the air turns cooler I get the itch to start baking again. I guess I like all the seasons but summer is truly is my favorite!

I just returned from the Eastern Shore yesterday where most of my extended family lives. I traveled back this time for a sad occasion; one of my dear cousins had passed away. As I sat in the tiny country church waiting for the service to begin I was looking at the old scarred pews and my thoughts began to wander... I realized that my dad had sat in these very same pews as a young boy that I had sat in when I was a little girl. Heck, my parents and all my aunts and uncles had been married here and their children baptized as well. Lots and lots of history where I sat. I remembered walking to church with my grandmother as a little girl (it's a very small town) and taking flowers for the altar too. I guess my point is that even though it was a sad occasion I was glad that I was prompted to remember such happy times. Much like the changing of the seasons, so too do our lives change - endings and beginnings - life is like a big circle.

Change the Layout of your Charts from Row to Column

When you create a chart, MS Excel will check the number of rows and columns. In a chart created automatically, by clicking F11, rows from the data table are created on the category axis. You may however, sometime later decide that you would like to switch from rows to columns in the category axis. Fortunately, this is not difficult to accomplish:

Follow the steps below to learn how:

  1. Select the chart.
  2. From the Chart menu, select Source Data.
  3. In Series in, select Columns.

Told you it was easy!

Adding Comments to a Formula in MS Excel

Sometimes you would just love to have a comment that would make things clearer for the person using the worksheet in MS Excel wouldn't you?

Well you can use this handly little trick to add a comment to a formula in MS Excel:

  1. At the end of your formula, add a plus sign (+), the N function, and an open parentheses.
  2. Key in your comment in quotation marks.
  3. Close the parentheses.

You can view the comment in the formula bar whenever you select the cell.
