Happy Halloween everyone! Sure, its a pagan ritual but what the heck, it's fun to dress up and scare each other. Let's just hope the kids are safe and sound this year.

We are having a cold snap in my neck of the woods right now. It feels like we went straight from summer right on into winter! We are having some construction done on the house and dust is everywhere which drives me crazy but I suspect I will manage. We always do don't we?

Time is seemingly flying by now and before you know it the holidays will be upon us - wow - I don't really want to thing about that quite yet!

Please help me to welcome Sharon, Bob, Pete, and Marie as our newest premium subscribers. Welcome to the family!

Let's get to the tips now!

Applying Styles in MS Word 2007

Styles will greatly improve the appearance and readability of your documents in MS Word. Employing the use of Styles will also make sure that your formatting is applied uniformly throughout your document.

This latest version of MS Word makes it easier than ever to apply styles to select parts of your documents. Follow the steps below to learn how:

  1. On the Home tab of the Ribbon, you will see a group called Styles.
  2. To preview a style, select a portion of your document and hover your mouse over one of the style buttons in the Style Group and you will be afforded a quick preview of that style in your document.
  3. If you like the style, simply click the Style button to apply it to your document.

Once you have decided on the styles for your document, you no longer need to use the buttons on the Ribbon. You can now simply press CTRL + Shift + S to open the Apply Styles menu.

The Apply Styles menu can be moved to any area of your Word screen. You can apply styles directly from the menu by selecting the text and then using the drop-down list in the Apply Styles menu to apply a style.

Disable Editing Languages in MS Word 2007

Quite a few people have written to me complaining about Word 2007's spelling and grammar feature. Many times people complained about previous versions when they displayed the red and green squiggly lines under words but in this latest version, they are complaining about words that are correct being marked as misspelled.

This is not a problem within Word's Spelling and Grammar utilities. The editing language has somehow been changed in the latest version.

If this happens to you, you can change your option so that it will not recur. Follow the steps below to find out how:

  1. Click the Office button.
  2. Select Word Options.
  3. Click Language Settings on the Popular tab.
  4. Make sure your preferred language is selected under Primary editing language.
  5. Select any unwanted languages under Enabled editing languages.
  6. Click Remove.
  7. Click OK twice.

MS Word will only check spelling and grammar for the language you have enabled. If you need to check spelling and grammar for a different language in the future, you will need to enable editing for that language.

Disable Word 2007's Mini Toolbar

When you select text in MS Word 2007 the Mini-toolbar appears. At first it is faint but when you hover your mouse over it, it becomes much clearer and prominent.

The Mini toolbar is designed to put common formatting commands close at hand for you. It is very convenient if you want to highlight a selection or change font characteristics, but the Mini toolbar can be cumbersome if you want to rearrange text by clicking and dragging. It can also be very distracting when you want to right-click to access the contextual menu.

If, for whatever reason, you find you do not like the Mini toolbar, follow the steps below to disable it:

  1. Click the Office button.
  2. Select Word Options.
  3. Click Popular in the left column.
  4. Deselect Show Mini Toolbar on selection.

Poof! It's gone!
