I would like to wish Happy Thanksgiving to you and your families. One of the things I am most thankful for is my wonderful family. I am also grateful to my extended family around the world - my subscribers. I so appreciate your support. You will be happy to know that every new subscription helps us to help homeless children when they have no one else to turn to. Part of every subscription payment goes to The Covenant House to help these kids. They will have a nice Thanksgiving because of your support.

I hope that you all have a plentiful feast this Thanksgiving and that you are surrounded by your family and loved ones. Try to take a few minutes and give thanks for all that you enjoy and think of those who are not so lucky.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you!

Add Autonumbering to your Excel Spreadsheet

Autonumbering will advance your numbered rows and keep them current, even if you should delete or add a row.

Unfortunately, MS Excel does not ship with an autonumbering feature like that found in MS Access, that increments a number each time you add a new row. In Excel 2003 and 2007 however, you can use the Row functon to add your own autonumbering to a list.

Say you want to create a list of all of your school's classes and their corresponding learning materials.

Follow the steps below to add autonumbering to the list:

  1. In A1, enter the formula below:

=TEXT(Row(A1),"000-000")

  1. Enter the name of the first class in B1.
  2. Enter the learning material of the first class in C1.
  3. Copy cell A1 to A2.
  4. Enter the name of the second class in B2.
  5. Enter the learning material of the second class in C2.
  6. Select A1:C2.
  7. Go to Data | List and select Create List.

Data List Dialog Box

  1. In Excel 2007, press CTRL + T and then click OK.

Notice, that when you type the name of the next class in B3 and press Tab, MS Excel will automatically provide the next number for you.

Unprotect Part of a Form in MS Word

A reader recently wrote and asked how she could protect sections where a form appeared in one section. She has MS Word 2003 and wants to have part of a document as a form which would be locked and the rest of the document able to be edited.

My Reply:

It is absolutely possible to accomplish this task in MS Word. Follow the steps below:

  1. Place a section break before and after the part that you want to protect.
  2. In the Protect Document task pane, after you select Filling in forms in the Editing Restrictions area, a Selected sections link will appear below that dropdown.
  3. Click that and uncheck any sections that you do not want to protect.

Consecutively Number Table Rows in MS Word

There may be times when you will want to have numbering in your table. Sometimes the numbering is an important part of your table and other times it is useful in identifying and referencing certain rows. Luckily, this is very easy to accomplish in all versions of MS Word from version 2000 forward.

Follow the steps below to learn how to insert consecutive numbers in your table rows:

  1. Launch MS Word if it is not already open.
  2. Create a table with five rows and five columns by doing the following:
  3. Click on Table | Insert | Table | 5 rows | 5 columns.
  4. Position your cursor above the first column until the cursor turns into a thick down arrow, then click.
  5. Click on Format.
  6. Click on Bullets and Numbering.
  7. Click on the Numbering tab.
  8. Select the basic numbering scheme.
  9. Click on Customize and delete the period after the number.

Numbered List

  1. Click on OK.
  2. Tab in the first column of your table and you should see your first number.

Every time you tab to that column, you will have the next consecutive number. You can resize the column if necessary to see your numbers.
