Excel Comments allow you to display information about the values in your cell. The information may be for your or other users and they are displayed when you mouse over the cell. The only issue with this is that it can sometimes obscure the data you are trying to vie and it can be very distracting and annoying.
You can do away with that annoyance and distraction by using Data Validation to attach information to a cell and Excel will display it only when the cell is selected.
Follow the steps below to learn how:
- Select your cell.
- Click the Data tab.
- From the Data Tools group, select Data Validation from the Data Validation drop-down.
- In the resulting dialog box, click the Input Message tab.
- Enter a title and a message. The title really isn’t necessary so you do not have to use that step if you do not care to. Take note that Excel checks the Show Input Message When Cell is Selection option by default. For this technique to work, you must have this option checked.
- Click OK.
Change your selection and move your mouse over the cell. Note that Excel does not display the text you entered.
Select the cell and Excel will display your message.
