Create Mailing Labels Using MS Works

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

I have received a question asking me how to create mailing labels using Microsoft Works.  I don’t know of too many folks who use Microsoft Works as it really is a very stripped down piece of software.  Myself, I would use the Microsoft Office Suite or OpenOffice Writer for this task.

Follow the steps below to create your mailing labels using MS Works:

  1. Make sure the database you use to create your labels is up to date.
  2. Open MS Works.
  3. Open a new document within MS Works.
  4. On the Tools menu, click Labels. Make sure that you select the Labels option to create labels with different information on each label.
  5. Click on the Label Size tab to select the size of your label.
  6. Click on the Database tab to select which database you will be using to create your labels.
  7. Click on the Recipients tab to select the database records you want to use.
  8. Click on the Label Layout tab to select the database fields you want to use and also set your preferences for your labels.
  9. Click the Printing Tab to select your printing options.
  10. Click Test to print a test sheet of  labels.
  11. Load the correct size labels into your printer and print!

It really isn’t as daunting as one might think is it?

Remove Spaces in MS Word

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

I am quite sure that has happened to you at some point; you copy and paste some text from the Web or one of your e-mail messages and it ends up with leading spaces on every single line!

There are ways to remove the offending spaces but as anyone who knows me, I am the queen of saving time and keystrokes and so I will tell you a little trick to get rid of these pesky spaces that is quick and easy!

  1. Select the text you have copied and pasted.
  2. Click on CTRL + E, which will center the text.
  3.  With the text still selected, click on CTRL + L, which will left-align the text.

That’s it, the spaces are now gone!

WordPerfect Default Tabs

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

Someone wrote to me recently very upset about the fact that her tabs were no longer set to a half inch in WordPerfect.  It was driving her nuts and she wanted her half inch tabs back again.

Luckily, I had a resolution for her and she didn’t go mad!

There are two ways to accomplish this task:

  • From the Menu bar, click on Format | Line Tab Set | Default | OK.
  •  From the Ruler, click just below the gray horizontal line just below the Ruler and select Default Tab Setting.

To restore all tab settings in your document to the default half inch tab setting, click on  Edit | Select All or use the shortcut CTRL + A to select the entire document before following the above directions.

Thank goodness this was an easy fix and the poor woman could settle down!
